LCCM Featured in AWI Design Solutions for creating “Gothic Glory” at St. Clare of Assisi
“LCCM did outstanding work on this important and meaningful project. They were very professional and worked collaboratively with the entire design and construction team. We are most grateful for the contribution of their craftsmanship,” says Hord.
The primary objective of this project was to create a new 22,000 square-foot Roman Catholic Church for a brand new and rapidly growing congregation based on Daniel Island, South Carolina. The new construction was to follow a traditional Gothic style church design with the main intention of looking and feeling like the many timeless Gothic cathedrals one might visit in Europe. The architectural firms, Franck and Lohsen out of Washington D.C., along with Hord Architects from Memphis, Tennessee, accomplished this goal with an impressive exterior.
They used a reinforced CMU structure veneered with brick and cast stone, and an interior filled with beautiful architectural details shown in the woodwork and decorative moulding and trim. Because of the prohibitive expense of using historical building materials, such as marble and stone as one would see in the designs of the European churches, the creative thinking and expertise of the designers allowed the project to capture and reproduce that Old World feeling by using wood materials and custom designed products.
According to Catherine August, ASID, NCIDQ, a member of the church’s design/build team, “we all knew that this project was no ordinary design/build project. Ours was one that comes along maybe once in a lifetime. We were attempting to build a true Gothic style Roman Catholic Church, and we knew because the project was so unique, we would have to search out the most unique trade companies to help us successfully complete the project. It was imperative that the woodwork company selected be unique and it was important to all teams involved that it be local if possible. Trident Construction LLC, Charleston, South Carolina, played an important role in this selection, and based on their recommendations and past experiences, the choice was made for Low Country Case & Millwork, an AWI member firm located in Ladson, South Carolina.
